In 1998, a focus group was formed to address a lack of middle school environmental education material in Sedgwick County, Kansas schools. Based on the recommendations of the educational advisory group, Earth Awareness Researchers for Tomorrow's Habitat was created to provide innovative, experiential learning opportunities to help teachers prepare students to become wise stewards of their environment.

The E.A.R.T.H. steering committee adopted an award-winning curriculum book that correlates to the Kansas Science Standards, and is modeled after the award-winning earth wellness program in Lincoln, Nebraska. E.A.R.T.H.'s goal is to provide curriculum, supplies, and teacher training in order to empower students with skills and knowledge to take appropriate action in areas of environmental protection now and in the future.

A pilot group of 12 teachers and 800 students was nominated to participate in the first year of the E.A.R.T.H. program in 1999. This is the 7 th year of the E.A.R.T.H. program and we are serving close to 5,000 students across Kansas.
